I’m Laura, I’m 33 years old and I live in Rome. I currently work as a secretary in a medical office, and I really enjoy being in contact with people. In my free time, I love cooking, reading — especially psychology books — and spending time with friends, laughing and joking with my nieces and nephews. I’ve been in a relationship with Salvatore for four years, and I hope our family will grow soon.
I always try to stay positive and enjoy life as much as possible, because I truly believe that, despite everything, it’s a real blessing. This mindset became even stronger when I started losing my hair — it was December 15th, 2019.
I won’t deny it was difficult, especially during the first two years, when I tried various treatments: corticosteroids, methotrexate, injections — you name it. My hair would grow back, but then, just when I started to feel hopeful, it would begin to fall out again.

In February 2022, I decided to stop all treatments. My body was saturated with everything I had taken, but even more than that, my mind was exhausted — trying to go back to how things were before was destroying me. Many people would say, “All things considered, you have a beautiful face,” or “There are so many ways to fix the problem nowadays,” but to me, those were poor comforts. My thick hair was gone.
The truth is, alopecia wasn’t an unfamiliar condition to me. My father had it too — he had no hair and no body hair — yet to me, he has always been the most handsome man in the world.
Alopecia is certainly more challenging for a woman to handle emotionally. But strength eventually returned, thanks to the tremendous support of my family and my partner, my faith, and also thanks to meeting S., whom I met through the AIPAF ODV association — finally, someone who could truly understand what I was going through.
My friendship with S. was a ray of light during a dark time marked by both the lockdown and alopecia.
Over the past few years, I’ve worn turbans — or nothing at all. It’s only in the last few months that I’ve started wearing a wig.
I liked myself before, when I still had my hair, and even after I stopped all treatments, because my face had gone back to being the same.
I like myself now, with my wig. Perfection doesn’t exist — we are all unique in our own imperfections!
